What is never published

Stated in full, because most enquiries reaching a page at this address are about one of the following, and a direct answer costs everybody less than a polite exchange.

  • Paid placements, sponsored posts, or anything described as a guest post with a link in it.
  • Link insertions into existing pages, whether offered as a favour, an exchange or a fee.
  • Vendor material presented as editorial, including material a vendor commissioned elsewhere.
  • Press releases, rewritten press releases, and pieces whose argument is a product.
  • Anything written to rank rather than to be read.

There is no rate at which any of that becomes available, and no arrangement under which it happens quietly. Offers do not get a reply, which is not rudeness so much as arithmetic about the volume.

The reason is commercial as much as editorial. What makes a sponsorship on this site worth buying is that the surrounding pages were not bought, and selling one destroys the other. That argument is set out where it belongs, on the sponsorship page.

What is published

Work that establishes something. Four conditions, and they are the same ones applied to everything already here.

  1. 1. It computes something

The piece establishes a figure from evidence somebody else can reach, rather than repeating one. A count, a comparison, a rate — with the source named and the method stated.

  2. 2. It states what it cannot support

Every claim carries its own limits in the text, not in a caveat at the end. Where the evidence runs out, the piece says so and stops.

  3. 3. It survives being checked

Figures are verified against their source before publication. Anything that cannot be reproduced comes out, however good the sentence around it is.

  4. 4. It is about the thing, not the category

Specific mechanisms, specific decisions, specific numbers. Pieces that survey a landscape without measuring any of it do not get published here.

The standard is a build step, not a promise

Most publications describe their editorial standards as intentions. Here the standard is executable: seven automated checks run against every page, and a page failing any of them stops the build rather than publishing in a degraded state.

A contributed piece meets the same list as everything else. It has to reach the length the check demands, vary its vocabulary enough to clear the repetition threshold, avoid a published list of stock phrases, and vary its sentence lengths the way writing by a person does. Its figures have to be computable from a named source, because a figure with nothing behind it halts the build instead of appearing as an estimate.

None of that is negotiable per piece, and none of it is applied by somebody's judgement on the day. How this site checks itself lists every check, the threshold each enforces, and — more usefully — the worst value actually observed across the 51 pages measured.

Passing all seven does not make a piece right. It makes it supported and structurally sound, which is a smaller claim and the only one a machine can make.

What the archive can support

Contributors have access to the same record every page here is built from: 14,951 entries from 969 publications, collected since 2014-08-07and still growing.

It answers questions about what the trade press published and when. It does not answer questions about what happened, what anything cost, or whether any measure worked, and pitches resting on those get told so early rather than late.

Its defects are published rather than discovered in review — three thin months in 2016, a collection that began in two different modes, under half the entries carrying a written summary, and a trailing edge the most recent weeks always sit behind. A pitch that survives contact with that list is usually a good one.

How to pitch

Write to [email protected] with the claim you intend to establish and the evidence you intend to establish it from. Two paragraphs is plenty. A finished draft is not required and not especially wanted before the claim has been discussed, since the commonest reason a piece fails here is that its central figure turns out not to exist.

What happens next. A reply within a few working days, saying yes, no, or which part of the idea the evidence will actually carry. Editing is on the argument and the figures rather than on the prose style. Nothing is published without the writer seeing the edited version.

Terms. Payment, rights and byline are agreed case by case before any work starts. There is no standing rate card for contributions, and inventing one for this page would sit badly beside everything else on it.

Corrections apply. A contributed piece carries the same obligation as any other: errors are corrected on the page where they appeared, described rather than applied silently. One conclusion has been withdrawn here since these pages began, and the page that carried it says so plainly.

If you were looking for something else

Sponsorship. Underwriting a section or a period, without a third-party script and without any influence over what gets written: the sponsorship page.

The archive as data. Research access and commissioned analysis: the research address.

Something factually wrong. Report it, particularly a figure: [email protected].
